So we were standing in line at Draegers buying La Chouffe and some other random framboise (wish Draegers carried Lindeman's Framboise), when all of the sudden a guy behind us said "if you like Belgium beers you should go to The Refuge in San Carlos". Anyone who knows me, knows that I LOVE Belgium beers (maybe I lived there in a past life or something). Immediately I thought - What?! A Belgium bar?!?! My wish came true!
So off we went on a Saturday night to find The Refuge. It took a little searching, but we found it in the downtown area of San Carlos on Laurel Street. Here is our review....
Atmosphere: Awesome! This small, upscale wine pub has modern decor with warm lighting which makes the place comfortable and inviting. A plasma TV for sports keeps the atmosphere casual.
Service: Good! Although the staff was not as attentive as we wanted (hey, we're from Vegas), they were still friendly and helpful with selections.
Music: Rock music - like NIN type of stuff.
Favorite food specialty: I enjoyed the World's Fair Ohio Burger which reminded me of a White Castle burger minus the grease and way more delicious (think fresh ground American beef - mmmmm healthy). The Refuge prides itself for having the best pastrami in the Bay Area, so Travis gave the Pastrami Burger a shot. It was extremely TASTY. Oh yes, and you must try the Strawberry Sofia dessert!
Favorite drink specialty: Why, Belgium beers of course! We loved Maredsous (my favorite), La Chouffe, Delirium Tremens and the Chimay Tripel White.
